Utah Adult Day Care Information

Adult day care, in Utah, is defined as continuous care and supervision, for three or more adults 18 years of age and older. Adult day care can be provided for at least four hours a day, but less than 24 hours a day. Such programs must meet the needs of functionally impaired adults in a protective setting through a comprehensive program that provides a variety of health, social, recreational, and related support services. Adult day care is regulated throughout the state through the Office of Licensing in the Utah Department of Human Services under state Administrative Rule R501-13, Adult Day Care.

In Utah all prescribed and over-the-counter medication shall be provided by the participant, by special arrangement with a licensed pharmacy, or with a caregiver. Each center must have a written policy and procedure in place to include self administered medication, as well as medication administered by persons with legal authority to do so. Utah requires a staff to participant ratio of 1:6, or 1:8, depending on the program. All staff must receive eight hours of initial orientation training designed by the director to meet the needs of the program, plus 10 hours of work-related training annually. Every year, directors of adult day care centers must obtain 10 hours of related training. At any time, the Office of Licensing shall have the authority to review program records.
