North Carolina Adult Day Care Information

Adult day care services, in North Carolina, are programs operated during the day that have been designed specifically to meet the needs of adults who need supervised care. This daytime support allows the participants to return to their homes in the evening and promotes their social, physical and emotional well-being, while enhancing the personal independence of seniors.

There are two types of adult day care programs in North Carolina. Adult day care provides supportive care during the day for aging, disabled and handicapped adults. However, adult day health care provides that same structure of supervised programming, but also offers daily nursing supervision. Adult day care and adult day health programs can both be provided within one program. Adult day care providers must meet North Carolina State Standards for Certification, the administrative rules (10A NCAC 06R) set by the Social Services Commission and are enforced by the State Division of Aging and Adult Services.

North Carolina Adult Day Care Minimum Standards

While attending the day care program, participants may keep and administer their own medicines. If a participant is determined to be unable to be responsible for his or her medication, then the health care coordinator shall give the correct dosage to the client at the correct time. Both adult day care and adult day health centers must have a full-time director, while a health center must have a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse on staff. In addition, the state requires a staff to participant ratio of 1:5,1:6, or 1:7, depending on the program. Adult day health programs, in North Carolina, are inspected at least monthly to assure compliance with standards while adult day care centers are routinely monitored by Adult Day Care Coordinators located at county departments of social services.
