Wisconsin Adult Day Care

Wisconsin Adult Day Care Information

Adult day care, in Wisconsin, is defined as a day program which provides the elderly and other adults with services when their caregivers are at work or need relief. Adult day care may be located in individual family homes, multi-use facilities such as churches, schools and senior centers, and free-standing centers. In Wisconsin, adult day certification is voluntary for non-Medicaid provider. Non-Medicaid providers do not have to be certified.

Wisconsin’s certification standards are designed for adult day care programs operating in a multi-use facility that is not located in or connected to a nursing home, such as a residential care facility or hospital as well as adult day care programs located in or connected to nursing homes. Services may include, but are not limited to offering personal care and supervision, medical care, medication administration, transportation, activities designed to meet physical, social, and leisure time needs, and meals. Meals must be provided if residents are present five hours a day and such meals must be designed to meet 1/3 of the participant’s nutritional needs for the day.

Wisconsin Adult Day Care Minimum Standards

Wisconsin requires non-licensed staff to consult with the prescribing practitioner or pharmacist if a staff member administers participants’ medications. Consultations might include information about each medication to be administered, and other requirements regarding storage and documentation must be met. The State of Wisconsin requires a staff to participant ratio of 1:6. If an adult day care center is certified, the DHS conducts surveys to determine compliance with certification standards.
