Virginia Adult Day Care

Virginia Adult Day Care Information

Virginia requires the State Board of Social Services to prescribe standards for certain activities, services and facilities for adult day care centers to protect aged, infirm, or disabled adults who are away from their homes during a part of the day. Adult day cares are meant to: ensure that the activities, services, and facilities of adult day care centers are conducive to the well-being of the participants and to reduce risks in the caregiving environment. Adult day health care centers (ADHC) are required to meet the needs of each participant, and centers may choose to admit recipients who have skilled needs only if professional nursing staff are immediately available on site to provide specialized required nursing care.

Virginia Adult Day Care Minimum Standards

In Virginia, a participant may take his own medication, provided that a physician has deemed the participant capable of administering medication. In addition, the physician must give written authorization for the participant to self-administer any medication. Drugs may be administered only by someone authorized to do so. The state requires a staff to participant ratio of 1:6.

No later than three weeks after beginning training, all staff must have at least 24 hours of training. In addition, staff who are primarily responsible for the direct care of participants must annually attend at least eight contact hours of staff development activities. These staff development activities are separate from first aid, CPR, and orientation training requirements. The summary of adult day care requirements, in Virginia, can be found here and here.

Virginia Adult Day Care Medicaid Waiver

Adult day health care Medicaid providers under the Home and Community-Based Elderly or Disabled Consumer-Direction (EDCD) Waiver must be licensed by the Department of Social Services (DSS). In addition, they must also adhere to the DSS adult day care center standards.
