South Carolina Adult Day Care

South Carolina Adult Day Care Information

In South Carolina, adult day care activities and therapies are offered through an individualized plan of care that sets forth measurable goals or behaviorally stated objectives, with such services being designed to activate, motivate, and retrain impaired or other categories of adults to enable them to sustain or regain functional independence. Standards for licensing day care facilities for adults are created by the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and administered by the Division of Health Licensing.

South Carolina Adult Day Care Minimum Standards

In South Carolina adult day care, a physician’s report shall include information regarding medications (name, type, dosage, and whether the individual is capable of self-administering). All medications must be administered by the staff to participants and they will be labeled and stored in a locked cabinet or container otherwise inaccessible to participants. The State of South Carolina requires a staff to participant ratio of 1:8.

A licensed practical nurse must be on the premises whenever home- and community-based waiver clients are present. Each facility must offer an orientation program that, at minimum, familiarizes new staff members with the facility and its policies and procedures, fire safety measures and infection control.

South Carolina Adult Day Care Medicaid Waiver

The Community Long Term Care (CLTC) Medicaid waiver program authorizes adult day health care (ADHC) as a covered service. As such, adult day center providers must maintain a current adult day care license.
