Adult Day Care in Mississippi
Mississippi Adult Day Care Information
Adult day care, in Mississippi, is defined as a place for aged and disabled individuals with serious health problems or impairments to go during the day. Programs offer activities and supervision, personal care supervision, nutrition, limited health care, and the opportunity to interact with other people in group socially or in individual activities. Mississippi does not require either licensure or certification of adult day care programs. However, the Mississippi Department of Human Services, Division of Aging and Adult Services, administers and monitors adult day care centers that wish to enter into an agreement to provide services. Funding is provided through the Area Agencies on Aging under Older Americans Act funding under a set of Quality Assurance Standards described.
Mississippi Adult Day Care Minimum Standards
Adult day care services, in Mississippi, are required to provide assistance in activities of daily living, health monitoring, education and health related services, medication management, transportation, professional therapy services and social services. Nursing and skilled nursing services are an optional service for adult day care providers to offer. If an adult day services program does not have a full-time registered nurse (RN) on staff, then the program must maintain medication information and provide reminders or prompt the client to initiate and follow through with self administration of medications. However, if a client is unable to self medicate, registered nursing services will be provided as needed.
There is no staff to client ratio other than the requirement that there be an adequate number of staff on the premises to accomplish the purpose of the program. The State of Mississippi requires that all staff must complete first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and Heimlich Technique training. No fewer than eight hours a year of in-service training is required, and should be appropriate to the staff member’s job function as well as participant care needs. Mississippi has Area Agencies on Aging monitor adult day care providers on site quarterly. Annually, the state’s Bureau of Audit and Evaluation in the Department of Human Services monitors the providers, but is not required to visit the site. The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities accreditation will be accepted in lieu of inspection.
