Michigan Adult Day Care Information
Adult day care, also, referred to as Adult Day Services, is defined by the State of Michigan as daytime care of less than 24-hours for elderly persons with functional or cognitive impairments. The care that is provided is a structured program of social and supportive services in a group setting other than the person's home.
Michigan Adult Day Care Minimum Standards
Michigan does not require either licensure or certification of adult day care programs, but local codes for health and public safety apply to such programs. The Michigan Office of Services to the Aging (OSA) requires that any adult day care service providers who receive state or federal funding from an Area Agency on Aging must therefore comply with the (OSA) Minimum State Service Standards for Adult Day Care. Michigan’s operating standards recognize two types of adult day community services: adult day care and dementia adult day care. Some standards are the same for both types and some differ.
The state requires a staff to participant ratio of 1:10. All program employees, in Michigan, are required to undergo an orientation training that includes, at the minimum, program introduction, assessment/observation skills, documentation and file maintenance, first-aid, aging process, and emergency procedures. Staff who work with dementia clients must also undergo specific crisis procedural training for that population. Michigan Adult Day Care Medicaid Waiver
In Michigan, adult day health services are a Medicaid-funded service through the Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) and the MI-Choice Home and Community-Based Waiver program. Medicaid adult day health care providers are also required to follow the OSA standards.
