Delaware Adult Day Care Information

In Delaware, Adult Day Care is defined as a program for functionally-impaired persons that provides a variety of supervised therapeutic, social and recreational activities for participants who cannot live independently (due to a physical or mental impairment), but do not require 24-hour institutional care.

Delaware Adult Day Care Minimum Standards

Delaware Adult Day Care Service minimum standards includes the following: the state requires a staff to participant ratio of 1:4 or 1:8 depending on the type of program, all aides are required to undergo orientation and training in understanding the adult day care team, personal care services, good nutrition for seniors, development and aging, infection control, documentation, body mechanics, creating a less restrictive environment, offering a safe and clean environment and verbal and nonverbal communication skills. The service regulations, also, require that activities must keep in mind the rights of all participants and shall be sensitive to their varying needs, abilities, interests, values and skills. There must be an Activities Director on staff. The service regulations require that regular inspections are done only once in a three year period. Delaware Adult Day Care Licensure Information

Delaware licenses adult day care facilities as both general programs and those specifically for participants with Alzheimer’s Disease. Alzheimer’s Day Treatment programs are limited to people with Alzheimer’s Disease or related dementia. To obtain licensure as a specialized day treatment program, medical, recreational, and personal care services must be offered. In addition, all staff in such centers must receive specialized training in Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia so they may provide the best possible care.
