About the Author

Paula Span currently writes for The New York Times on the New Old Age blog. She is also a journalism instructor at Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism.  In 2009, she was named Distinguished Teacher of the Year.  She lives in New Jersey.

Span knew she wanted to be a reporter when she was in the fourth grade, and before blogging for The New York Times, she also wrote for the Washington Post as a correspondent based in New York City.  She covered a wide array of topics including finance, AIDS, urban life and development, and art and culture.

She spent time writing for the Washington Post Magazine, as well.  There she wrote feature stories veterans and military disability, retirement, and even competitive skateboarding.  Her long list of publications also includes Glamour, Parenting, Esquire, Newsweek, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, and New York Magazine.
