Every year since 2004 Genworth Financial releases a study on the Cost of Long Term Care Comparisons. The 2010 report was recently conducted by CareScout and published as one of the most comprehensive adult day care and long-term care cost reports. The data was collected from more than 13,000 facilities across the United States.
Costs of Adult Day Care
The 2010 report notes that adult day care health services are up about $6.50 per day from 2009. The average median price per day is around $60. These findings come from more than 1,300 adult day care facilities and are based on typical charges for a 6 to 8 hour stay in order to more accurately determine the average, because adult day health facilities determine fees differently. Some may charge by the day or by the hour, regardless of the services used.
Almost two-thirds of seniors (age 65 or older) need some type of long-term care. Whether they live in a nursing home, assisted living center or require the services of an adult day care, the costs associated with long-term care can be a burden for those on fixed incomes.
“Care levels” and other pricing methods may be used to determine fee schedules for health-related services in addition to the standard daily fee. The survey conducted by Genworth Financial does not include those additional charges.
Adult day care health centers are a popular option for seniors who want stay in their homes or with family as long as possible. The centers provide community-based services for their enrollees while offering family caregivers a break from the stress of 24-hour care.
While adult day care facilities differ in their offerings and prices, most centers provide socialization opportunities, supervision, and scheduled recreational activities for seniors and Alzheimer’s or dementia patients. Personalized health care, med management, transportation services, meals, and rehabilitative therapies may also be offered at some facilities.
